Overview
Customers often choose a product because of how it looks. A design registration under the Designs Act, 2000 protects exactly that — the shape, configuration, pattern and ornamentation of a product — and is often faster and less expensive than a patent for physical products.
The most important rule: file before you launch. Showing, selling or posting a design publicly before filing can destroy its novelty.
Geographical Indications (GI) protect products whose qualities come from their place of origin — like Darjeeling tea or Basmati rice — under the GI Act, 1999. We help producer associations register GIs and producers register as authorised users.

Usually not. A design must be new at the time of filing, and prior publication or sale generally destroys novelty. Always file before you launch, exhibit or post the design online.
If customers buy your product for its look, a design registration is often the faster and more cost-effective choice. If your product has a new technical function, consider a patent. Many products benefit from both.

An association of producers, or an organisation or authority representing the interests of producers of the goods — not usually an individual. Individual producers can then register as authorised users of the GI.
